Contact meJerzy Nowosielski (1923–2011) — mystical icon painter, one of the most important Polish sacred artists.
Jerzy Nowosielski was born on September 27, 1923, in Kraków. He was one of the most distinguished Polish painters of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries — an artist deeply rooted in the tradition of Orthodox icon painting who created his own unique artistic language combining the spirituality of Eastern Christianity with modernity.
He studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts under Tadeusz Kantor. From very early on he shaped his distinctive style: geometric simplification of forms, pure and intense colors, deep contemplative silence. His painting is simultaneously icon and abstraction, homage to tradition and challenge to the eye of the contemporary viewer.
Nowosielski created not only easel paintings of sacred subjects and nudes, but also designed church decorations — mosaics, stained glass, frescoes. His decorative schemes can be found today in dozens of churches in Poland and abroad.
He was a professor at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, a respected teacher and thinker. He left behind an extensive body of work: thousands of paintings, icons, drawings and prints, which entered the most important Polish museums and private collections.
Nowosielski created exceptional cycles of nudes — synthesis of icon and eroticism.
